Metromile was founded in 2011 at the forefront of a now-popular trend in the auto insurance industry: pay-per-mile insurance. Based on the belief that many drivers actually drive fewer miles than what insurance companies estimate, Metromile offered a new method of billing for car insurance.
With Metromile per-mile insurance, you pay a low monthly base rate plus just a few cents per mile when you drive. At the end of the month, your bill is your base rate plus how many miles you drove at your per-mile rate.
Metromile is currently available in Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. In 2022, Metromile was acquired by Lemonade.
