Our thoughts on Liberty Mutual
Liberty Mutual is one of the largest home insurance companies in the U.S., with a strong financial rating.
Liberty Mutual performed well in all aspects of our home insurance survey and outpaced some competitors. It was the top-rated company for digital experience, and 90% of customers said they plan to renew.
Because Liberty Mutual doesn’t provide average home insurance rates to our data service, Quadrant, we can’t compare it to other companies in terms of cost or rank it on our best home insurance companies list. Liberty Mutual insurance rates, like all companies, will vary from place to place, so you’ll need to get quotes for your home to compare with other companies,
“Compare rates across insurers for similar coverages. Investigate available discounts, such as for bundling or security systems,” says Siwei Gao, professor of insurance studies at Eastern Kentucky University.
Overall: Liberty Mutual doesn't provide rates to our data partner, but is highly rated by current customers in almost all categories.
Pros
- Available nationwide
- A large, stable company with a solid financial standing
- Top-ranked for digital service in our survey
Cons
- Below-average customer satisfaction ratings with J.D. Power
- Liberty Mutual doesn’t publish rates, making it difficult to compare

Does Liberty Mutual own Safeco?
Safeco was acquired by Liberty Mutual in 2008 and sells personal and business lines of insurance, including home and auto, in 48 states. On March 4, 2025, Liberty Mutual announced that it would be retiring its Safeco brand beginning in 2026. Policies purchased through Safeco will not be impacted, and policyholders will keep their agents.
The retiring of the Safeco brand is part of Liberty Mutual's strategy to focus on its main brand. In a press release, Tyler Asher, Liberty Mutual's chief distribution and marketing officer, U.S. Retail Markets, said, "...this will significantly simplify our business, allow us to dedicate our considerable marketing power behind a single brand, and enable us to leverage and scale our technology to deliver unified but differentiated products and experiences across channels.”
According to a Liberty Mutual spokesperson while the timeline isn't fully known, the company aims for a seamless transition for policyholders and agents.
