What is the cheapest car insurance for doctors?
Most companies consider doctors to be low-risk drivers, which can mean lower car insurance rates.
"They might be more likely to have a garage than park on the street. They might be in nicer neighborhoods, less likely to drive aggressively or drunk," says Josiah Hatch, owner of Bender Hatch Insurance in Boston, Mass.
Some companies offer specific discounts for doctors and medical professionals, but that isn’t industry-wide.
The table below shows the average car insurance rates for doctors at some of the largest insurance companies in the country.
Company | Average base rate | Average doctor rate | Price difference ($) | Price difference (%) |
---|---|---|---|---|
AAA | $2,455 | $2,382 | $73 | 9.70% |
Geico | $1,791 | $1,609 | $182 | 9.00% |
Country Financial | $1,645 | $1,555 | $90 | 9.45% |
Grange Mutual | $1,154 | $1,046 | $108 | 9.06% |
Mercury Insurance | $2,276 | $2,166 | $110 | 9.52% |
Progressive | $2,446 | $2,126 | $320 | 8.69% |
State Auto | $4,277 | $4,143 | $134 | 9.69% |
Rates will differ depending on the company you choose and if you add any extras, like roadside assistance, to your policy because those will all affect the final rate differently. For instance, it you’re looking for the lowest prices, Grange Mutual is the best car insurance for doctors.
However, AAA has the highest discount, at nearly 10%, despite having one of the highest base rates of the companies surveyed. Your rate will vary since so many factors go into the calculation.
Car insurance discounts for doctors
In addition to lower based rates and discounts for certain professions, some insurance providers also offer discount car insurance for doctors and other medical professionals. Some have a direct occupation discount, while others offer a group membership (affinity) discount. Geico is one example of this.
Geico offers car insurance discounts for professional affinity groups such as the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. This allows members of that group to get a discount on their insurance. Not all insurance companies have these discounts, though. Progressive has no specific discounts of any type for doctors or medical professionals.
How can doctors get cheaper car insurance?
While specific discounts may be hard to come by, doctors can get cheaper car insurance in a variety of ways. This includes:
- Bundling home and auto insurance when possible
- Being a good driver
- Low-mileage discounts
- Maintaining good credit
- Enrolling in paperless billing/auto-pay
And there’s always old-fashioned price shopping. Compare car insurance rates for doctors across multiple companies to find the best plan for you.
