Our take

Amica ranked No. 10 in our comparison of the best car insurance companies for 2024. It is widely available and can be a one-stop shop for most of your insurance needs, but its premiums were on the more expensive end of the spectrum and it didn’t rate highly for customer satisfaction.

Amica is a good one-stop shop for most of your insurance needs, from car to home and life policies. But if you’re looking for a bargain on insurance premiums, it may not be your first choice.

In contrast to our survey findings, research firm J.D. Power gave Amica its highest marks for auto claims satisfaction in its 2024 review of major car insurance providers. Amica has a low volume of complaints with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Pros:
  • Widely available
  • Can fulfill multiple insurance needs
  • Solid financial stability
Cons:
  • Premiums are more expensive
  • Customer satisfaction rate was near the bottom in our survey

Amica car insurance rates by state

Insurance rates are based on several factors, such as age, gender, credit rating and the type of car you drive. One of the biggest factors, however, is where you live.

Average rates by state vary. Some states have considerably higher insurance rates due to factors like severe weather and higher litigation costs.

Drivers in Connecticut, for example, will find they need to pay a little more car insurance with Amica, while those in Massachusetts will, on average, pay a little less.

Here’s a sample of Amica car insurance rates from selected states for a 40-year-old male or female driver.

Amica insurance rates for seniors

Around age 65, drivers start to see auto insurance rates increasing.

Car insurance companies base their rates on risk profiles, and unfortunately, there is evidence that driving becomes riskier as we age. This may be related to slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, or other factors and will certainly vary from driver to driver.

For that reason, expect to see your rates begin to increase as you reach 65, but it will not be nearly as steep as the rates you saw in your teens.

Here’s what senior drivers can expect to pay with Amica at various ages.

AgeAverage annual premiums, maleAverage annual premiums, female
60$2,131$2,131
65$2,188$2,188

Amica insurance rates by driver profile

Insurers are very good at crunching data to get accurate risk profiles of drivers at every age, stage of life and gender. Your driving record is another good indicator of risk; past tickets and accidents indicate the likelihood of more in the future.

They also consider factors you may not have considered, such as credit rating. A poor credit score may be an indicator of your ability to keep up with premium payments and Amica is tough on drivers with poor credit.

Here’s a look at what drivers with common negative marks on their profiles can expect to pay annually for full coverage insurance with Amica, based on a 40-year-old driver. Poor credit will cost you more with Amica than either a speeding ticket or an accident.

What do people ask about Amica Insurance?

People have a lot of questions about Amica, and we’re here to answer some of the common ones we see in online forums.

Why is Amica so expensive?

Car insurance rates are based on a lot of factors, and each company weighs those factors differently. If Amica is expensive for you, then it’s likely you have one or more factors that cause Amica rates to go up. That said, Amica is more expensive than average, and that is simply based on overall rating systems.

Why did my Amica insurance rate increase?

Like all auto insurance companies, Amica has faced higher claim and repair costs and greater risk in recent years. Auto insurance rates have gone up across the nation. It’s also possible that some change in your rating factors caused an increase, such as a ticket, accident or change in household drivers.

Is Amica a good insurance company?

In our survey, customers gave Amica lower than average marks for customer satisfaction, but J.D. Power had the opposite view when it came to auto claims satisfaction. In J.D. Power’s 2024 survey, Amica was the top-ranked car insurer for auto claims satisfaction.

In online forums, a number of customers say they’ve had good experiences filing claims with Amica, they just wish it wasn’t so expensive.
