Our take

Progressive is the second-largest car insurance provider in the country, falling only behind State Farm for total premiums written. Working with an insurer of Progressive’s side comes with its own set of advantages. For one, it’s an option for drivers in all 50 states, and for another, it has the financial footing to invest in the latest online applications and ways to service customers.

However, working with a big insurer can have its downsides. Progressive scored about average for customer service in our ranking of the Best Car Insurance Companies for 2024, and its premiums are on the more expensive side.

The company offers numerous ways to score discounts for bundling, installing safety features, and professional affiliations and has a rock-solid credit rating.

Progressive was 8th overall in our ranking of the top 15 car insurance companies.

What do people ask about Progressive insurance?

If you’re considering Progressive car insurance or are currently a customer considering other options, you want to get to know the company. Here you’ll find answers to common questions about Progressive.

Why did my Progressive rate go up?

Car insurance rates go up for a lot of reasons. If your rate with Progressive has gone up and you don’t know of a reason why (like a ticket or a change in your household), call the company to ask. Rate increases are not always related to you as a driver; often they reflect larger changes in the overall risk a company takes on. Recently, car insurance rates have risen due to increased costs and risk, from higher repair costs to severe weather.

Why is Progressive so cheap?

Our rate analysis found Progressive to be middling in terms of rates, but for some people, Progressive may be considerably cheaper than other options. The difference can be due to location, driver profile, the car you drive and more.

Is Progressive a good insurance company?

In our survey, customers gave Progressive average marks for customer satisfaction, and J.D. Power rates it slightly below average for auto claims satisfaction.

It is available pretty much anywhere you may drive and has solid financial stability, making it a good pick for many drivers.
